Designing Smarter Chatbots, Stronger Microcopy, and Better AI Editing—What I Learned

Revamping AI Chatbots for Better Engagement

Recently, I came across some intriguing insights about AI chatbots that really got me thinking about how we design interactions. According to an article by Maria Rosala, Georgia Kenderova, and Tanner Kohler (What Is Your Site’s AI Chatbot for?), many AI chatbots are missing the mark. They argue that poor placement and vague value propositions often mean users don’t even notice the bot’s presence (or, worse, don’t understand what it can do). I found it particularly interesting that the experts suggest a more focused approach: design chatbots that answer complex, context-specific questions rather than just mimicking product browsing.

This has definite implications for us as designers. The key takeaway is that clarity is everything—if users aren’t sure what the chatbot’s purpose is, they’re likely to ignore it. I’m now thinking about how I can apply these ideas to my own work, maybe by rethinking chatbot placement and labelling in my designs.

Crafting Informational Microcopy That Connects

Another standout insight concerns the often-overlooked art of microcopy. Taylor Dykes highlights the importance of what she calls the 3 C’s—clarity, concision, and character—in her piece (The 3 C’s of Informational Microcopy). For us design professionals, aligning microcopy with audience context isn’t just nice to have; it’s essential for ensuring users know exactly where they are and what to do next.

I really appreciated the emphasis on tone—after all, a bit of humor or a friendly nudge can transform an interface from bland to engaging. It’s a reminder that while brevity is key, a dash of personality humanises our digital products. This piece is a gentle nudge to step back and re-evaluate how our words serve the overall UX.

Elevating AI Editing Techniques

For those of us tinkering with AI as an editing tool, Taylor Dykes shared a neat 7-minute video (3 Tips to Make AI a Better Editor) that served as a gentle reminder: good prompts still matter. Even if AI does a decent job editing, it won’t always hit the mark without proper guidance.

The video outlines three actionable tips that can really help in refining AI edits—making me consider immediate tweaks to my workflow so that I give my AI tools clearer instructions. It’s not a radical revelation, but sometimes the simplest tips make the biggest difference in our daily practices.

Staying Ahead with Continuous Learning

Lastly, I couldn’t help but notice several promotions for self-paced courses and live training sessions from NN/g. Whether it’s the upcoming Designing AI Experiences course or the Demonstrating UX Value programme, there’s still plenty of room to grow our skills (and yes, even earn a certification or win a little gift card along the way!).

These opportunities are a great way to stay updated on digital product design trends and sharpen practical skills. I’m definitely considering signing up for one or two—it never hurts to continue learning and refining our craft!
